Your area of work
You will be responsible for teaching and research in the field of conservation and restoration of wooden sculpture and wooden cultural heritage objects with painted surfaces and finishes within the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes at the Cologne Institute of Conservation Sciences. You will deliver subject-specific teaching in both practical and theoretical contexts, as well as contribute to the interdisciplinary teaching across the curriculum. You will be expected to acquire objects for teaching and research projects, supervise BA and MA projects, and contribute to doctoral supervision. You will further develop the discipline through your research, with a view to strengthening the integration of research and teaching and supporting the dissemination and transfer of research outcomes.
You will teach in German and be willing to contribute to teaching in English. Through your research activities, you will strengthen the faculty’s profile and actively pursue external funding. You will play an active role in the faculty’s self-governance and be willing to take on responsibility in this area.

Your profile
You hold a university degree in conservation and restoration, specialising in wooden sculpture or wooden cultural heritage objects with painted surfaces and finishes, and either a subject-specific PhD or evidence of an equivalent academic achievement in accordance with Section 36(1) of the Higher Education Act (HG). You have at least five years of relevant professional experience in the field of conservation and restoration of wooden sculpture and wooden cultural heritage, including at least three years outside of higher education, which enables you to represent the subject in theory and practice to the expected extent.
You possess excellent knowledge of historical materials, techniques and contexts, as well as of historical and current methods, materials and technologies for the conservation and restoration of wooden sculpture and wooden cultural heritage with painted surfaces and finishes. You will demonstrate a critical engagement with technological developments, in their broader cultural, economic and societal contexts, and have a sound understanding of the significance and development of new technologies. You have an independent academic profile in the field of research and are able to incorporate research questions and findings into your teaching. You will be experienced in working across interdisciplinary contexts and able to bridge between academic disciplines. Experience in academic administration, project management and staff management, together with a track record of securing external funding, is expected. An established network, including international contacts, is desirable.
Teaching experience in higher education is desirable. You have the ability to align your work with the university’s long-term goals, as well as the ability to reliably develop effective solutions collaboratively within interdisciplinary and team-based contexts.
